Matariki Craft-ernoon

On a beautiful day, our Ahuriri (Napier) community came together to celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year, with a series of engaging and fun-filled activities. The event was designed to honour both tamariki and their caregivers, providing a space for creativity, connection, and cultural appreciation.

The celebration featured several craft stations where tamariki had the opportunity to learn and create. One of the highlights was the poi-making station. Under the guidance of skilled instructors, the children learned the art of crafting poi, a traditional Māori performance tool. They took pride in their creations, twirling and swinging their handmade poi with joy and enthusiasm.

In addition to poi-making, there were various arts and crafts stations that allowed tamariki to explore their artistic talents. From painting and drawing to creating intricate designs, the crafts stations buzzed with creativity and excitement. The vibrant artworks produced by the children were a testament to their imagination and artistic flair.

As the day progressed, everyone came together for a shared kai – a traditional hangi. The aroma of delicious food filled the air, and the community gathered to enjoy a hearty meal. This shared kai was not just a meal but a moment of togetherness, where caregivers and tamariki bonded over stories, laughter, and the spirit of Matariki.

The celebration was filled with moments of joy and laughter, and of course, there was ice-cream! The sweet treat added a delightful touch to the festivities, bringing smiles to the faces of both young and old.

This event was a beautiful way to acknowledge the significance of Matariki, celebrate our tamariki and caregivers, and strengthen our community bonds. It was a day filled with creative designs, heartfelt connections, and cherished memories that will be remembered for years to come. We had over 60 people in attendance, which was a super successful turn out – we can’t wait for the next one!
