We recently visited tamariki and rangatahi (ages 5-17) from across Hawkes Bay in various group whare (homes) to run an exciting and interactive session called “Te Reo a Kori – Language and Movement,” just in time for Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week)! The session was packed with fun activities that blended learning with movement, giving everyone a chance to play and explore traditional Māori games.
Our tamariki and rangatahi got hands-on with Whai (traditional string games), Ti Rakau (stick games), Poi, and Mau Rakau (Māori martial arts skills). The energy was high as everyone got to learn, play, and move while embracing their culture. Each participant left with a special koha (gift), their very own poi and Ti Rakau, to continue practicing these amazing games at home!
The second half of the event was just as exciting, with a Ki o Rahi session. The group learned the Kaupapa (principles) of the game, practiced their ki (ball) skills, and picked up some new kupu and reo (words and language) related to the game. After learning the basics, everyone came together for a few rounds of Ki o Rahi, bringing all the skills into action. It was incredible to see our community connect, have fun, and use Te Reo Māori throughout the games.
Our tamariki and rangatahi were full of energy and enthusiasm. One young person, showing off their goodie bag from Sport Hawkes Bay, said, “It’s like my birthday!” Another young person, after the sports event, eagerly asked, “Ki o Rahi is mean – when can we play again?”
This event was all about connecting, learning, and celebrating Māori language through play. We can’t wait to do it again!
