Matariki Tūhono in partnership with Caring Families

It was a cold but sunny morning as the team from VOYCE gathered outside Tūnohopū Marae situated by steaming hot pools on the edge of Lake Rotorua.

We were joined by over 100 caregivers, tamariki and rangatahi from Caring Families for our powhiri to start our Matariki celebrations. Families had come from all over the Waiariki region and for many this was their first visit to a marae.

After our morning kai and introductions, we walked the tamariki over to the village hall where we had prepared Matariki games and activities.  The midlands VOYCE team were supported by four of our teenagers who led the glitter and tattoos station and the cup cake decorating station.  Arts and crafts and a seed planting stations completed option.  Tamariki had an opportunity to do all the activities over the morning and afternoon sessions.

To end our morning session Antz led some hand clapping games before we re-joined the caregivers for game of rock paper scissors and a yummy hangi lunch and a kapa haka event.

After lunch Antz brought the group back together with a mindfulness and whanaungataga session before we went back to activities.

Around 50 tamariki and rangatahi joined in our activities and the feedback from the caregivers was really positive, although they may have eaten too many cupcakes!

We look forward to partnering with Caring Families for future events.
