At just 23, Kat is juggling a lot—raising a baby and caring for a 12-year-old—so finding flexible work that fits her responsibilities is no easy task. That’s why her recent experience working with Multi Events Limited through VOYCE – Whakarongo Mai was such a big deal.

Kat successfully completed two shifts, gaining valuable work experience while earning some extra income. She took on a variety of roles, including ticketing, bar service, and event clean-up. While the work was new to her, having a group of familiar faces—including others from VOYCE—made a huge difference. Pairing up with people she knew helped ease her nerves and made the experience even more enjoyable.

One of the biggest hurdles Kat faced was her social anxiety and discomfort in crowded spaces. But with the support of her peers and the VOYCE team, she pushed through. Before starting, she also achieved her Level 4 Host Responsibility Certificate through ServeWise—a fantastic milestone that strengthens her CV and opens doors for future opportunities in hospitality.

Kat also found the Multi Events Limited staff incredibly welcoming and consistent, which made each shift feel more comfortable. Seeing the same friendly faces each time built her confidence and made her feel part of the team. And as a bonus? She got to enjoy some great live music while working—an unexpected perk of the job!

For Kat, this wasn’t just about earning money—it was about gaining experience, building confidence, and proving to herself that she could step outside her comfort zone. Her story is a testament to the power of support, opportunity, and resilience.

Whānau care is where a child is being raised by someone in their whānau or extended family. Often it means a child living with their grandparents – but could also be another family member like an aunt, uncle or older sibling. Whāngai is the traditional Māori practice of whānau care.
