Our young people expressed a desire to celebrate Youth Week with a games night, and VOYCE delivered an evening filled with fin and connection. Oranga Tamariki joined us for a 45-minute workshop, inviting the young people to contribute their ides for the All About Me portal. Following the workshop, everyone enjoyed a range of games, shared laughter and enjoyed delicious pizza together.

This tūhono was open to all young people in care, or with care experience, and was attended by young people ranging in ages 7-22. The feedback from the tamariki was overwhelmingly positive. Here are some of their thoughts:

“I would like to do this more often.”

“I liked hanging out with all the other rangatahi.”

“I hope my brother comes to the next one, he would’ve loved this.”

“It is fun to hang out with new people.”

The young people really enjoyed themselves and expressed a desire to have these kinds of events more frequently!

Every tamaiti receives nurturing, protection, and provision, as any good parent would offer.

Tamariki and rangatahi are involved in decisions that affect them, and their voices are honoured.

Promise Four: Wellbeing

Timely, accessible, and culturally conscious health and mental health services are available to all taiohi.

Promise Two: Stability

Young people in care experience consistency, safety, and a sense of belonging.

Whānau care is where a child is being raised by someone in their whānau or extended family. Often it means a child living with their grandparents – but could also be another family member like an aunt, uncle or older sibling. Whāngai is the traditional Māori practice of whānau care.
