On the 29th of August 2024, we hosted our second Aroturuki Games Night at the VOYCE Office in Papamoa. Nine incredible rangatahi, aged between 7 and 16, came together for an evening of fun and connection. The night was led by kaimahi JG, with support from our wonderful partners at Aroturuki Tamariki.

This event was more than just about games. It provided a unique opportunity for our rangatahi to share their experiences, reflect on their journeys, and connect with others who understand their stories. The atmosphere was relaxed, allowing the rangatahi to comfortably voice their thoughts and offer valuable feedback on how we can better support them.

The feedback from the rangatahi was overwhelmingly positive. They loved the games and expressed a strong desire for more frequent gatherings. Here are some of their thoughts:

  • “I want to see my buddy from the last games night.”
  • “Can’t wait for the next one!”
  • “I want to meet more rangatahi in care.”
  • “I love the game Taco, Cat, Goat, Cheese, Pizza!!”

We’re thrilled to see the positive impact these events have on our rangatahi and are excited to continue providing spaces where they can connect, have fun, and feel heard.

Whānau care is where a child is being raised by someone in their whānau or extended family. Often it means a child living with their grandparents – but could also be another family member like an aunt, uncle or older sibling. Whāngai is the traditional Māori practice of whānau care.
